Milgram

    Cards (7)

    • Agentic state

      • Participants acted as the tools of the experimenter, passing the responsibility for the consequences of his actions to the experimenter
    • The learner (Mr Wallace) would ask the participant to stop and make noises suggesting they were in pain; this is what Milgram used to test if people would obey blindly to orders despite the consequences
    • Teacher and learner procedure

      1. A learner was asked questions and would be shocked for each wrong answer
      2. The teacher would use the machine to control the shocks received after each wrong answer
      3. The learner (Mr Wallace) was the same every time without the participants knowledge and would pretend to be harmed by the shocks
    • Milgram study
      • A lab experiment with no IV
      • 40 men aged between 20-50 years old
      • Each participant was paid $4
      • The shocks ranged from 15 V to 450 V
      • All participants were debriefed after the experiment
    • Prods given when the teacher was unsure on continuing

      • Prod 1 – please continue
      • Prod 2 – the experiment requires that you continue
      • Prod 3 – it is absolutely essential that you continue
      • Prod 4 – you have no other choice, you must go on
    • Extra Information:
Participants who asked questions on the learner's welfare were always told "although the shocks may be painful, there is no permanent tissue damage, so please go on."
