    What society says is right and wrong, which can differ from culture to culture, over time and circumstance
  • Sanctions for social crime

    • Informal (imposed by non-authorities such as peers and parents, e.g. removing privileges, grounding)
    • Formal (punished by authority e.g. police and work, e.g. suspension, custodial sentence, disciplinary)
  • Purpose of sanctions
    • To achieve social control
  • Sanctions can be good and bad, as they lead to laws to prevent behaviors usually deviant but not always

    • Marriage in Utah at 14 is legal but not legal in the UK till the age of 18

    Rules and socially acceptable standards that govern people's behaviors
  • Deviant behavior for social norms 

    • Wearing black to a Chinese funeral instead of wearing white. This is because they represent the dead by white

    A list of rules usually held by an individual, organization, or group

    • Police code of ethics
  • Moral codes broken in society

    Can be classed as deviant due to it not fitting the general norm and breaking norms or society

    General principles and guidelines which tell us how we should live our lives
  • Values
    Identify what is right and wrong in terms of behavior
  • Deviant behaviour of values
    • Wearing odd socks in public
  • A formal sanction against deviance is one imposed by a member of authority
  • an example of authority is police, workplace and college
  • Examples of a formal sanction can be fines, prison and exclusion
  • An informal sanction is imposed by someone with no authority
  • Someone with no authority is an example of peers, parents, bystanders
  • An informal sanction can be an example of grounding a child or removing privileges for immoral behaviour
  • The three types of deviant behaviour are good, bad and odd
  • Good deviant behaviour is an example of having good attendance in a workplace eg 100% across 25 years
  • good deviant behaviour is seen as an acceptable behaviour towards society
  • Bad deviant behaviour is seen as behaviour which goes against what society sees as acceptable. This can be an example of attacking someone
  • An odd deviant behaviour is an example of owning 35 cats this is because is seen as an unusual behaviour. It’s not seen as good or bad
