Population genetics is the study of the variation in alleles and genotypes within the gene pool of the population, and how those allele frequencies change over time.
If a species is to succeed and not become extinct, it needs genetic variation between the individuals within that population. Individuals inherit their genomes from their parents and pass on some of their genetic material to their offspring.
