This research provides strong empirical support for Social Penetration Theory and Reis and Shaver's (1988) findings. It shows that mutual sharing of personal information is key to developing trust and intimacy- increasing the validity of self-disclosure explanations of relationships
This suggests that self- disclosure is not
however fails to explain the role of self-disclosure in the general population - cannot establish a general rule
