  1. identify section of DNA that contains required gene. cut gene out from the source chromosome using enzyme
  2. a plasmid is removed from a bacterium and cut open using enzymes.
  3. the gene is places into the plasmid and then sealed using enzymes
  4. the plasmid is placed into a bacterium for growth. this bacterium will then divide passing the gene onto the other bacteria.
  5. all the bacteria produce protein (e.g. insulin)
  6. the product is removed and purified before it is given to humans for use
