Creaking or rubbing sound e.g. creaking door/boat or boots crunching on snow
Caused by the roughened surfaces of the pleurae rubbing together
Caused by inflammation (pleurisy) of the pleural surface e.g. lobar pneumonia
Often associated with pleuritic pain on inspiration
