• presumption of capacity - every individual is assumed to have the capacity to make own decisions unless proved otherwise
• unwise decisions - professionals must not treat individuals for making a decision that seems unwise to them because everyone has their own preferences
• less restrictive option - anything done on behalf of the individual should be least restrictive of their rights and freedoms
• best interest - action taken made on behalf of individual must be made in their best interest
