feminism

Cards (16)

  • Feminism
Socialist - patriarchy stems from capitalism
  • Radical feminism

The personal is the political e.g. the home, who cleans, who looks after the child, patriarchy in the bedroom. Culture promotes male dominance = entertainment industry, TV etc. Kate Millet advocates this. They believe that it's not just through laws but through everything that exists within society.

  • Socialist feminist

Example - Rowbotham talks about how society needs to be radically restructured in order to have a socialist revolution and within that revolution and having a feminist revolution within that society. So constructing a fair society within revolution.
  • Radical feminism

Millet would argue that society needs to be radically overthrown to overthrow male dominance through culture. Because they don't just dominate society but also culture. They may also argue that in some ways we need a society without men. They believe that for women to be liberated they need to be in women only spaces. Basically the only kind of oppression is gender.
  • Postmodern feminism
Hooks argues for intersectionality, she says that women experience society differently based on things like: race, social class, abilities. etc & its not just gender. She believes that without this thinking it would lead to freedom to white women rather than freedom to all women.
  • Feminists agree on the economy
    • Women are excluded from the economy
    • Women become economically dependent on men because they earn more
    • Economic inequalities need to be addressed
  • Feminists disagree on the role of the state
    • Socialist feminists
    • Extent to which feminists agree on the role of the state
  • State is patriarchal
    Designed to benefit men
  • Friedan's view on the state
A feminist state is one with legal reform for women to have equality of opportunity, where women have the opportunity to do well.
  • Millet's view on the state

Her feminist state is one that is radically overthrown, where in some ways we need to be apart from men. We need to separate our new society from patriarchy.
  • Hooks' view on the state
She would believe that adjusting the state in order to have freedom for women is actually saying freedom for white women, from higher class backgrounds so that they can have more access to society. So the perfect feminist state is one which is intersectional, where race, gender, class etc. are considered to have more equality in society. This is done through education (liberation) and creating more access through those things.
  • Rowbotham's view on the state
The only state in order to address inequalities in society is a socialist state. Because a socialist movement is already fairly strong so it's better to ride off the back of that movement and make the socialist revolution successful and within that create a socialist society with the values of equality but really work to make educate the men who ultimately would rule that society.
  • Yes there is some agreement on this but their solution to this is so far apart that we ultimately see that despite their agreement on the causes, their disagreement on the solution leads to too far of a disagreement on order for it to be a unified ideology.
