  • Process layout
    The arrangement of machines such that the machines and equipment are grouped together by the function they perform
    Process production deals with high-variety and low-volume production
    Each good has a sequence of production and the steps involved are intermittent, moving from one department to another
    Service businesses such as banks and insurance companies utlise process layout to accommodate the handling of customers with different needs
    E.g. hospitals with different wards dedicated to different types of medical care such as maternity ward or intensive care unit
  • Product Layout
    The product layout is where the equipment arrangement relates to the sequence of tasks performed in manufacturing of a product
    Product production → characterised by the manufacturing of a high volume of constant quality goods
    assembly line is the most common layout type of production as it aims to achieve the best possible combination of personnel and machine use
    Work stations are arranged to match the sequence of operations as work flows from station to station and most set times, which requires the understanding, tools and skills
  • Fixed position layout

    Fixed position is an operational arrangement in which employees and equipment come to the product
    Where a product remains in one location due to its weight or bulk
    Example, a bridge construction team and more efficient this way
