  • Beck's cognitive Theory of Depression 

    Beck believed a persons cognitions create vulnerability to depression.
  • Negative self-schema
    some people develop a negative self-schema about themselves which means they interpret information in a negative way.
    This can be as a result of parental or peer rejection or criticism from people around us.
    It causes us to attend the negative aspects of a situation and ignore the positives.
    Negative schemas lead to conative biases. These are sweeping conclusions regarding self worth. Negative schemas lead to cognitive biases.
  • A negative triad
    A person develops a dysfunctional view of themselves because of negative thinking and irrational views about the world, the future and oneself.
    Examples: Negative view of the world like saying 'everyone is against me' because I'm worthless.
    Negative view about the future: 'ill never be good at anything'.
    Negative view about one-self: I'm worthless and inadequate.
