Microscopy

    Cards (9)

    • Cells are Studied Using Microscopes
    • Light microscopes

      • Work by passing light through the specimen
      • Can be used to study living cells
    • Electron microscopes

      • Use electrons rather than light
      • Can achieve much greater magnification than light microscopes
      • Can be used to study the internal structure of cells, but not living cells
    • How to View a Specimen Using a Light Microscope

      1. Take a thin slice of the specimen
      2. Put a drop of water on a clean slide to hold the specimen in place
      3. Add a drop of stain if needed to make the specimen more visible
      4. Place the slide on the microscope stage
      5. Adjust the focus to get a clear image
    • How to Make a Scientific Drawing of a Specimen

      1. Draw the main features using clear lines
      2. Make sure the drawing takes up at most half the space
      3. Label the important features and include the magnification used
    • Magnification
How many times bigger the image is compared to the real object
    • Calculating Magnification

      1. Total magnification = eyepiece lens magnification x objective lens magnification
      2. If you don't know the lens magnifications, you can calculate magnification as image size / real size
    • Standard form

A way to write very big or very small numbers using a decimal and a power of 10
    • To convert between different units, you can use the table provided to express the measurement in standard form
