  personal memories of events - contains contextual details plus emotional tone.
• semantic memory


  shared memories for facts and knowledge. these memories may be concrete.

  generally begin as episodic memories as we acquire knowledge based on personal experiences.
• procedural memory


  memory for how to do things. such memories are automatic and a result of repeated practice.

  thinking too much about it disrupts the automatic process. it is automatic so that we can focus our attention on other tasks.
