Gas exchange

• Gas exchange takes place in the alveoli
• Gas exchange - the process where you inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide
• diffusion - the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
• Adaptations of alveoli:

  • Large surface area to increase the amount of diffusion
  • Thin walls allow gasses to pass through
  • Good blood supply so that oxygen can be passed into the bloodstream more sufficiently
