  • Career development
    • important aspect in your life’s journey because you will spend a bigger part of your life in your career.  Career growth and development is a process through which your distinct characteristics for work are formed.
  • Personal factors influencing career choices :
    1. PersonalityAttitudes
    2. Values
    3. Skills
    4. Interest
  • Personality
    • your traits and characteristics that affects the way you do your work.  Each of us have unique personality traits. Your career choice should also match your personality traits.
  • According to Sta. Maria ( 2000) explained that personality assessment is classified into following basic dimensions: 
    1. Extraversion or Introversion
    2. Sensing or Intuitive
    3. Thinking or Feeling
    4. Judging or Perceiving.
  • Attitudes
    • essential factors in  career development  success, the three components are:
    1. Cognition  or your set of beliefs or perception
    2. Affects , or how you feel about certain situations
    3. Behaviour , or actions caused by the way you think and how you feel.
  • Values
    • the principles or standards that guide you in making choices and decisions in life. The totality of what you value in life makes up your value system. 
  • Skills
    • your abilities or proficiencies that have been developed through training or formal education. Skills may be grouped as technical or soft / functional skills . 
  • Technical skills
    • your knowledge of theories and your capacity to perform specific and operational tasks related to a job.  
  • Functional skills
    • proficiencies that enable you to stand out with employers when you apply for work or change your career. This skills will help you move flexible at different stages of your career. This includes communication skills, teamwork, organization and problem solving . 
    • Interests or preference
    • activities that you enjoy doing. This may include your likes or dislikes or the things that motivates you. When your work is aligned with your interests, you find your work exciting and challenging. 
  • According to the Psychologists John Holland, personalities may be classified into six types:
    1. Realistic 
    2. Investigative
    3. Artistic  
    4. Enterprising 
    5. Social 
    6. Conventional 
  • Realistic
    • enjoy activites where they can create and manipulate things by using their hands. They are usually describes as persistent, practical , genuine , conforming , hardheaded , shy, and frank. 
  • Investigative
    • prefer occupations that focus on scientific endeavors. They like activities that requires observation, analysis and creative investigation. They are usually described as analytical, independent, introvert, rational, methodical, curious and reserved. 
  • Artistic
    • usually prefer activities that are free, unsystematic and creative. They enjoy activites where they can express freedom and originality. They are usually describes as imaginative, emotional, nonconforming, expressive, independent,open , idealistic and original.
  • Enterprising
    • prefer activities that influence or convince others to achieve organization and economic growth. This preference allows them to acquire leadership, interpersonal, and persuasive skills. They are usually described as enthusiastic, energetic, pleasure-seeking, domineering, acquisitive, ambitious, extrovert, impulsive, self-confident, adventurous, and popular.
  • Social
    • usually prefer activities that will help others to develop and be enlightened. They are concerned about the welfare of others and are competent in dealing with people. They are usually described as convincing, responsible, patient, helpful, understanding, cooperative, friendly, kind, and sympathetic.
    • Conventional
    • prefer activities that are structured and orderly. They enjoy activities that are accurate; they keep very organized records. They are usually described as thrifty, efficient, careful, orderly, conforming, inhibited, conscientious, and obedient. 
  • Job
    • all the activities or  tasks that people do whether they are paid or not.
    • routinely done, and you do it  for financial and security and stability
  • Career
    • a life long vocation that is planned and follows a logical progressions of jobs within the chosen profession. Sta. Maria ( 2000) claimed that career is a profession that individuals pursue in their lifetime, even though it may change.
    • something where you focus your passion and interest
    • Family
    • your choice of a career is sometimes influenced by your parents. If you admire them because  of what they do, you may be influenced to pursue the same. 
    • Peer Group Influence
    • friends influence the choice of your career.  In a study conducted by Hezlina and Embong ( 2015 ) , it was found out that there is a strong impact on the influence of peers on the career choice or preference of teenagers. 
  • Financial or Economic Condition
    • among Filipinos , the family’s income or economic condition is another factor in choosing career. 
  • Mass Media
    • Television and movie personalities may even influence your choice of career. 
  • Steady State
    • characterized by a fixed improvement in knowledge and skills such as the medical, dental and engineering professions.
  • A linear path
    • involves in an upward movement where an increase in responsibility and authority at work is observed. Managers and politician are involved in this career path.
  • Transitory path
    • involves a continuous movement in a career, and jobs are usually short term. 
  • Spiral path
    • involves regular changes in one’s job, usually in a span of five to seven years. 
  • Laddered Career Path
    • It usually starts from the lowest position to the top or managerial and executive. 
  •  Latticed Career Path,
    • which aims to build stronger connections between the employer and the employee, as well as instill loyalty among individuals. 
  • Assessment
    • The first step in creating career plan is to become more aware of yourself.
  • Explore career opportunities
    • this stage provides the opportunity to discover the varied career options available in relation to yourself. 
    • Arrow down your list of career choices  or options 
    • after having identified the possible career options that match your interests, values, skills and personality traits you need to identify the top three possible careers  that you find very interesting and you are eager to pursue. 
  • Decide or choose the best option
    • at this stage , you have to identify which among  the top three choices  you will pursue. 
  • Set your career goals and implement your plans
    • this stage requires you to identfiy your purpose or the goals that you may want to achieve in life.  Clarity of purpose must be identified so that you will be guided as to how and when to finish what you have started. 
  • Communication Skills - which include verbal and non verbal .
     1. Speaking skills
    2. Conversation skills
    3. Telephone skills
    4. Writing skills
    5. Listening skills
    6. Body languange  - form of non verbal communication 
  • Time and Stress Management skills
    - are important aspects in personal development . When you are capable of managing your time , you are able to reduce stress and stay focused and able to think clearly.  You can maintain work –life balance and demonstrate a high sense of responsibility, which results in increased productivity. 
  • Personal Care and Personal Appearance
    • plays a critical role in applying for a job as well as giving positive impression in the workplace. Good grooming and corporate attire are the winning elements in job interviews. A professional appearance is an image depicting confidence and reliabilty. 
  • Personal Finances
    • knowing how to manage your personal finances determines your priorities, values and motivation to realize your goals. Budgeting is important to manage your personal finances.
