Density

Cards (10)

  • Density
The amount of mass in unit volume. It tells us how tightly matter is packed together.
  • Objects could have the same volume but have different densities
  • Density formula
    Density = Mass / Volume
  • Measuring density of a regular solid
    1. Measure width, length and depth
    2. Weigh on a balance scale to find mass
    3. Find volume
  • Measuring volume of an irregular solid

    1. Place in Eureka can of water and measure volume of water displaced
    2. If smaller, observe change in water level in measuring cylinder
  • Water's density is very close to 1g/cm^3
  • If a solid sinks in water
Its density is greater than 1g/cm^3
  • If a solid floats in water
Its density is less than 1g/cm^3
  • Measuring mass of a liquid

    1. Measure mass of empty measuring cylinder
    2. Pour liquid into measuring cylinder and measure total mass
    3. Subtract mass of empty cylinder to find mass of liquid
  • Measuring volume of a liquid

    Record reading on measuring cylinder
