EKPHRASIS

• in an emphasis, the poem is interrupted by a description of a work of art or by a story
• they provide accounts which are interesting in themselves, but they also link to the narrative
• sometimes they have resonances in the real world of Augustan Rome, or help us to explore the themes of the Aeneid
