  • BENEFITS OF LAYERS
    • seperate contents of page into parts
important in complex multi-page publication because layers can be worked on separately without disturbing other layers
    • can be locked so they’re not altered by accident
    • can be visible or hidden to declutter while working
  • The master page (first layer) is where the template for publication is stored. Will include items that appear on most/all pages in the publication. Structure of layout is established with columns, margins&gutters, headers&footers, borders, guildlines and logos. These help publication have a distinctive identity.
  • Drop caps are enlarged first letters in an article. They emphasise the start of the article and create contrast in size. Commonly used in magazines and newspaper layouts
  • Hanging indents are where the drop cap is left hanging above a widened margin. It creates white space and emphasises the start of the article.
  • Reverse is created when text (normally black) is made white. Can aid legibility if the text is on a dark background. Lightens a layout by reducing the impact of dark tones and increasing the value of the text.
  • Wrapping text enables it to follow the shape of an object or image. It creates a link (unity) between image and text. It changes the rectangular text box into a curvy or angular shape and it can save space in a busy layout.
  • Flowing text along a path adds eye catching contrast. Flow text can suggest movement. It can also create soft curves for a line of straight text and can lead the readers eye through a layout.
