  • Schizophrenia - This is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally.
  • SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA
    Delusions - beliefs that aren’t in line with the culture and that don’t make sense to others, like:
  • SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA -- HALLUCINATIONS
    Auditory hallucinations - hearing voices when no one is around.
    Tactile hallucinations - strange sensations or feelings the person can’t explain.
    Visual hallucinations - see people or things that aren’t there, or the person thinks the shape of things looks wrong
  • Disorganized Thinking (Speech) – answers to questions may be partially or completely unrelated. Rarely, speech may include putting together meaningless words that can’t be understood, sometimes known as word salad.
  • Extremely Disorganized Or Abnormal Motor Behavior – behavior can include resistance to instruction, inappropriate or bizarre posture, a complete lack of response, or useless and excessive movement.

  • S/E OF ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS FIRST GENERATION
    1. Dry mouth
    2. Increased saliva
    3. Blurred vision
    4. Loss of appetite
    5. Constipation
    6. Diarrhea
    7. Heartburn
    8. Nausea
  • SERIOUS S/E OF ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS FIRST GENERATION
    1. Inability to move the eyes
    2. Loss of balance control
    3. Difficulty swallowing
    4. Mask-like face
    5. Muscle spasm, especially of the neck and back
    6. Restlessness
    7. Shuffling walk
    8. Stiffness of the arms and legs

    1. Clozapine
    2. Risperidone
  • Clozapine
    • the only FDA-approved medication for treating schizophrenia that is resistant to other treatments.
    • It is also used to lessen suicidal behaviors in those with schizophrenia who are at risk.

    1. Drowsiness
    2. Blurred vision
    3. Constipation
    4. Dizziness
    5. Lightheadedness
    6. Weight gain
  • SERIOUS S/E OF SECOND GENERATION ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS
    1. Convulsions (seizures)
    2. Trouble with thinking
    3. Trouble controlling body movements
    4. Myocarditis
    5. Cardiomyopathy
    6. Blood dyscrasias (neutropenia, agranulocytosis, granulocytopenia)
    7. Severe constipation
    8. Shaking/tremor
