Wolsey's rise to power

• He got a job as an almoner, which gave him access to the king
• henry was vain and disinterested in routine which gave room for Wolsey to organise day-to-day tasks
• Organised English army logistics in 1513 during invasion of France
• Son of Ipswich Butcher, degree from Oxford at 15
• Chaplain under Henry 7, later dean of Lincoln
• sent on diplomatic missions under Henry 7
• Part of Foxe's entourage (one of Henry's most trusted councillors)
• Quickly became chief advisor (resent from Nobility)
• by 1515 became lord chancellor and cardinal
• 1518 papal legate and 1524 confirmed for life
• 1509 royal almoner
• Wolsey pleased Henry because their personalities and lavish lifestyles were similar
• until 1511 he was adamantly against war but realised Henry's keenness so changed his mind
• 1498 ordained as Priest of Marlborough
• Dudley and Empson were removed from power (W manipulated Henry to make them leave)
• Catherine's achievement at Flodden shone a good light on Wolsey
• He was quick to recognise opportunities
• Henry referred all matters to him by 1514
• Parliament called 2 times while he was Chief advisor
• Came from Ipswich butcher= resentment in nobility due to his wealth at Hampton court
