Plant Hormones

Cards (10)

  • What is auxin?

A plant hormone which controls growth in the tips of shoots and roots
  • What does the growth of plants using auxin respond to?
    Light (phototropism) and gravity (gravitropism)
  • Where is auxin produced?
In the tips of shoots and roots
  • Why does auxin move just behind the tips where it is produced?
It stimulates the cell elongation process
  • Why might a shoot stop growing if the tip is removed?
    No auxin is available
  • How does extra auxin affect growth in the shoots?
    It promotes growth
  • How does extra auxin affect growth in the roots?
    It inhibits growth
  • What happens when a shoot tip is exposed to light?
More auxin accumulates in the side that's in the shade which makes the shoot grow longer on the shaded side and bend towards the light
  • What happens when a sideways-growing shoot is affected by gravity?
It produces an equal distribution of auxin in the tip on the lower side which bends the shoot upwards
  • What happens when a sideways-growing root is exposed to gravity?
There is more auxin on the lower side of the tip but this inhibits growth therefore cells on the top elongate faster and it bends downwards
