    It gets the body ready for 'fight or flight' by increasing the supply of oxygen and glucose to cells in the brain and muscles, e.g. heart rate

  • What does thyroxine do?
    It regulates the basal metabolic rate and stimulates protein synthesis for growth and development
  • What is thyroxine released in response to?
    Thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH
  • Where is TSH released?
    The pituitary gland
  • What keeps thyroxine levels in the blood at the right level?
    A negative feedback system which affects the secretion of TSH
