Cards (4)

  • context: a poem about one of the songs of Experience reflecting the more negative aspects of life
  • structure: blake uses a lot of repetition which could imply the cycle of poverty and that there's no escape for the lower social class
  • "i wander thro' each charter'd street" - uses 1st person showing a personal first-hand account of the problems in London. 'charter'd' could suggest everything in London is mapped out and owned by the government
  • "and blights with plagues the marriage hearse" - 'plague' could suggest there's no cure for the level of suffering and pain like an infestation that's attacking London. 'hearse' Is a funeral carriage, blake ends the poem with an oxymoron (two opposite words) to create an ominous tone
