The Cheka was set up by the Bolsheviks in December 1917 and was headed by Dzherzhinksy
The Cheka differed from previous variants of the secret police since they used terror to victimise people based on who they were and not just because of their actions
"Your first duty is to ask him to which class he belongs, what are his origins, his education and his occupation. These questions should decide the fate of the prisoner"
The Cheka formally implemented the Red Terror, involving enforcing War communism, grain requisitioning, the LabourCode, the elimination of kulaks, the administration of labourcamps and the militarisation of labour
The Cheka was disbanded and replaced by the State Police Administration (GPU) in 1922
The GPU was expanded in 1924 and was renamed the United State Police Adminstration (OGPU)
