why did Henry want a divorce ?

• Reasons: marriage was against god's will, needed a legitimate heir and fallen in love with Anne Boylen
• Henry was very religious, bible annotated, given title 'defender of the faith' by pope for his attack on Martin Luther
• Leviticus stated 'if a man shall take his brother's wife, it is an unclean thing.... they shall be childless'
• Henry had papal dispersion to marry Catherine however Julius 2 said not allow to marry brother's widow as against god's will
• in 1527 when arranging Mary to Francis, they questioned her legitimacy
• if marriage to Catherine was not legitimate then Mary would not be
• Henry was worried as descendent of Edward 4 alive which could cause unrest if H had no legitimate heir
• Henry's illegitimate son, Henry Fitzroy, son with his mistress Elizabeth Blount in 1525 was sent to run the council of the north in experience
• Catherine was 40, stopped sleeping with H in 1524
