  • evil and power was known to be real and the devil as a constant threat to their souls in the Jacobean era. Many people were executed as suspected witches.
  • the witches' prophecies drive Macbeth to think of murderous thoughts and carry out evil deeds, without them even mentioning it. This leads Macbeth to the end of the play to being tyrant, behaving brutally and showing a lack of love or concern to other
  • "shakes so my single state of man that function"
  • before the murder of King Duncan, Macbeth wrestles with his conscience - his wicked thoughts overweight the actual deeds - "present fears are less than horrible imaginings."
  • macbeth becomes more concerned with what might happen than in reality and uses evil methods to achieve his desires - "nothing is, but what is not"
  • witches appear at the start of the play in the middle of a thunderstorm which sets the tone as to what follows. they discuss wicked acts they carry out against ordinary men and women.

  • sicne opening of play starts in the middle of a storm, a further storm rages on on the night of Duncan's murder and many highly unnatural occurrences are reported in act 2.
  • in the final scenes, the trees come to life as birnam wood moves to dunsinane by macduff, who isn't naturally born
  • "the night has been unruly: where we lay"
  • moment sbefore macduff announces the discovery of duncan's body, lennox talks about events that happened while the murder was taking place. this includes strong winds, and owl screeching and strange ghostly cries in the night. the natural world has been disturbed and disrupted following the unnatural killing of a king
