LM

Cards (8)

  • "I fear thy nature it is too full of the milk of human kindness"-LM

LM fear M is not brutal enough to commit regicide. Metaphor, figurative of milk an innocence coursing through his veins making him weak in LM eyes. M already is known to be a killer. LM fears he wont kill because he has loyalties to him shows LM as deceptive. Gender roles of a man being big and strong and emasculated by wife.
  • "Come you spirit unsex me here"

Imperative- remove expectation of women so she can harden herself for what's to come although she is the driving force from Duncan's murder as she manipulates him and is capable but LM thinks not . Summoning spirits.
  • "come to my woman's breasts and take my milk for gall"

Juxtaposition what a mother should be vs LM. Reveals her spiteful nature. Child bearing is a blessing from God but poisoning the child shows how she wants to go against womanhood and God. Distrust her.
  • “I dare do all that may become a man; who dares do more is none”
killing a king does not make him more of a man. "dare" to take a risk. "Become" he is not a man yet and not masculine enough. Euphemism for Macbeth masculinity is about honor and doing the right thing. But he does end up killing Duncan so is M a coward who is easily manipulated by his wife
  • "When you durst do it then you were a man " LM

Implying that honour is irrelevant and violence and bravery is what LM thinks what makes a man. Difference in ideology between M and LM
  • " Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had done it " LM
Reveals LM more vulnerable side. Whilst shes ambitious she lacks physical power to act on it. Demonstrates LM manipulative nature as the "spur" to prompt macbeth towards regicide. Through this concept, Shakespeare is portraying old-fashioned societal views of women being physically and mentally inferior.
  • "The sleeping and the dead are but as pictures" - LM

She mocks M after he killed Duncan. Questioning why M is scared of the dead bodies and it looks like a scary image only children are scared of.
  • By self and violent hands took off her life

"violent" lady macbeth is so violent she cant help it but by doing it to herself, connotes to death pain and sufferring. LM keeps all this sufferrning inside her. Indirectly she is very involved and failed to fully appear as a traditional woman. No different to macbeth. Cannot clean the blood from her hands
