Social Cognitive Theory - is the view that behavior can be learned by observing others
4 different cognitive requirements: attention, retention, reproduction, motivation
attention: the observer must pay attention to the MODEL. several factors, such as characteristics of the model, they need to be likely or conventionally attractive or admired and respected by the observer. the observer must feel like they can identify with the model. The behavior of the model needs to be consistent and reinforced
retention: the learner must be able to remember the behavior that had been observed in order to produce it immediately or after some time.
reproduction: The learner must physically and mentally be able to carry out the behavior. There needs to be certain level of SELF-EFFICACY, which is believing that the observer will succeed accomplish a task. SELF-EFFICACY plays a crucial role, whether the learner would imitate the behavior or not
motivation: the observer must want to replicate behavior done by the model, this can come from VICARIOUS REINFORCEMENT, which is observers observing if the model got punished or reinforced by their behavior, then deciding if they should imitate
