    Quality of life vary by environment, services, pollution, crowds and jobs
    Formal occupations: regularly paid regulated by the state e.g banking, IT industry
    Informal occupations: poorly paid jobs upon you don't need qualifications. not regulated by the state e.g street vending, rickshaw driving
  • Low wages in rural jobs -> push factors for people coming into urban areas
    Uni education -> pull factor or young people to come in, study and pay taxes
    Emerging middle class -> increase amount of people living in urban areas
  • Urban & Economic Growth
    Poverty in the informal sector prevents India from improving health and education. The government can't invest in hospitals or school since informal works don't pay tax. This also keeps kids out of school to work informally, leading to children failing to get their education. 80% of waste is recycled and contributes £700m to Mumbai's economy per year

    Chawls: 4-5 story building. Families live in a single room and toilet facilities are shared. Overcrowded, poorly ventilated but affordable
    Slums: 1-2 story buildings built without planning. Poor sanitations
    Pavement dwellers: huts along the pavement. Pay rent to criminals who control the pavements. Structures are illegal and may be demolished by authorities

    Overcrowdings in chawls can lead to health issues because diseases can spread easily since everyone is unvaccinated. There are also electrical hazards and safety issues.
