One limitation of filter theory is findings are inconsistent
Levinger re-examined Kerckhoff and Davis's (1962) study and he found no evidence that attitude similarity or complementarity of needs was associated with relationship length or satisfaction
This inconsistency casts doubt on filter theory and suggest that the researchers might be making to many assumptions about the evidence. Reports of similarity/complementary could be due to social desirability bias or misunderstanding the questions being asked.
This weakens this theory and makes it difficult for us to draw conclusions.
Bohns,2013 argue that couples with opposite goals styles can have happy and fulfilling relationships. This means that similarity might be less significant than filter theory proposes.
