Regional Variation

• Standard English is the generally accepted form of the language; particularly lexis and grammar.
• Accent is the sounds of an individual produced during speech and it may be regional or social.
• Dialect is the variation in words and grammatical structures associated with a particular geographical region.
• Prescriptive attitudes are the enforcement of a rule or method; insistence on particular lexis, grammar, phonetics etc.
• A descriptive approach is the describing of what actually occurs in an objective and non-judgemental way.
