Reinfusion of blood or blood products taken from the samepatient
Allogenic/homologous blood transfusion
Transfusion of blood taken from a donor to a recipient
Autologous blood transfusion
Can avoid many complications associated with allogenic transfusion such as acute hemolytic reactions, allergic and febrile reactions, and transmission of diseases like hepatitis B and AIDS
Avoids immunosuppressive effects of allogenic transfusion
Beneficial for patients with rare blood groups
Preoperative blood donation (POBD)
1. Begins 4-5 weeks before proposed surgery
2. One donation per week to collect 5 units over 5 weeks
3. Iron tablets prescribed to prevent anemia
4. Last donation at least 72 hours before surgery
Acute normovolemic hemodilution
Removal of blood from the patient immediately before or just after induction of anesthesia, replaced with fluid (crystalloids 1:3, colloids 1:1)
Intraoperative cell salvage
Blood collected from the operative field and draining sites, mixed with anticoagulants, filtered, washed with saline, and then pumped into a reinfusion bag (most WBCs, platelets, clotting factors and other debris are eliminated)
