  • On the 2nd August Britain assured the German Ambassador that Britain would not go to war with Germany unless they invaded Belgium or used the English Channel to attack France
  • On 3rd August news reached London of German troops massing at the Belgium border
    • The Prime Minister gave in to increasing pressure and ordered Winston Churchill to mobilise the Royal Navy and Richard Haldane to prepare the British Army for war
  • On 4th August Britain sent its own ultimatum to Germany
    • It demanded that Germany withdraw their troops or Britain would declare war
    • Germany ignored the demand and Britain declared war that same day
