  • Passive audience- if we apply effects theories to this then Bandura's hypodermic needle theory would say the mass media could influence or effect a passive audience directly and uniformly by shooting or injecting them with messages designed to trigger a response. The audience is passive and powerless to prevent the influence of the text.
  • cultivation theory- passive audience- gerbner would say using his effects theory called cultivation theory that TV appears to cultivate people's ideologies and beliefs, the more you watch the greater the effect. the more violence depicted against women in programmes like No Offence (or the killing) the more audiences will normalise this and expect it.

  • Socialisation- the socialisation aligns people to the world they see on television or in gaming. This can lead to common middle of the road views called mainstreaming and resonance which is when what people see in violent media is also what they experience and therefore resonates in their own lives.
  • Mean world theory or index- the mean world index finds that long-term exposure to television in which violence is frequent cultivates the image of a mean and dangerous world.
  • Mean world index and no offence- people may believe that there are often crimes in the world around them centered around disabled people (for example)
