Oxidation and Reduction

Cards (5)

  • OIL RIG:
    Oxidation
    Is
    Loss of electrons
    Reduction
    Is
    Gain of electrons
  • In a redox reaction, one substance loses electrons (oxidation) while another gains those electrons (reduction). Oxidation and reduction occur at the same time
    • Reduction is the removal of oxygen from a substance
    • Oxidation is the addition of oxygen to a substance
  • How to find which is reduced and oxidized in a reaction:
    • Solve for the ionic equation
    • Solve the half equations to find which substances have gained or lost electrons
  • An oxidizing agent causing another substance to be oxidized, so it become reduced. A reducing agent causes another substances to be reduced, it becoming oxidised
