  • how does parliament gain power?
    by 1625, king had to ask permission to tax people in order to deal with problems like war etc, parliament realised if they didn’t allow him to raise money they could get power, money for king was now only granted when parliament had control

    charles 1 and parliament were ready to fight

  • 1642-1648..
    war goes on, everyone thinks charles in gunna win, but as it goes on parliament gets more and more victories, charles desperately fights at Preston in August 1648 but loses, soon clear charles is defeated

    ➜ didnt take trial seriously
    ➜ refused to defend himself
    ➜ accused of treason (crime of betraying one’s country)
    ➜ most jury’s wanted nothing to do with it
  • Charles’ execution
    ➜ many executioners refused him
    ➜ executioners would only do it if they could hide their identities
    ➜ charles stepped on to scaffold at 2:00
    ➜ axe fell out of executioners hand, charles head came off in one blow
