  • Second order effects- specific attitudes such as law and order or to personal safety e.g. women need to have care when travelling late at night on their own and we need more police on the streets in the UK to protect women.
  • the effects of the media build up over time
  • these repeated representations change our perceptions and alter our ideas over time
  • these repetitions may change our behaviour over time
  • the cultivation of effects of the media can change dominant ideologies of society
  • difference between first and second order effects- first order effects are general beliefs about the world (heavy viewers of crime dramas may come to believe that the real world is more violent and dangerous than it actually is) and second order effects are more specific attitudes (such as a hatred for law and order)
