Commonwealth

• 1948: The Registration Act allowing anyone within the empire and commonwealth as British citizens
• Commonwealth created in 1949.
• The Commonwealth helped to share political traditions, helping in keeping political ties.
• Regular Commonwealth conferences held, once every two years and attended by Prime Minister, Presidents.
• Commonwealth helped Britain to bolster its international position in the post- colonial world. Help to provide a strong and wide ranging diplomatic network.
• 1945: Britain's position at the United Nations security council, is seen as a reflection of a strong British status acquired through the Empire and attaining wide influence.
• Countries within the British Empire still follow a similar legal system as Britain and in Education, through creation of Universities.
• A major conference held in 1952 on: Commonwealth Economic Conference, with the attendance of 8 countries and the majority were Dominions.
• The city of London remained as one of the worlds major financial centers, headquarters of banking, insurance and investment companies.
• 1962: The Commonwealth Immigration Act, it divided immigrants into three different groups:

  1. Those with employment in the UK already arranged
  2. those with skills or qualifications
  3. all others were placed on a waiting list, with ex-service men at the top
