  • News values- negativity, proximity, currency, continuity, uniqueness, simplicity, expectedness, elite people, size/impact, exclusivity, human/personal interest, recency,
  • some events are seen as more or less important by news producers
  • negative news stories are often seen as more important than positive ones
  • proximity matters- the closer the event, happens to where the readers live, the more value it has. it is also considered more valuable if it is considered more valuable if it is about a country or area that their readers care about.
  • recency- the more recent the event, the more important it seems
  • currency- if a story has been going on for a while it will be familiar to many readers and may be seen as valuable as a result
  • continuity- if an event happens that will go on for a long time and present multiple opportunities for new angles on stories
  • simplicity- the easier a story is to understand, the more likely a paper is to report it, newspapers will often simplify complex news stories
  • size- the more people effected by the story- the more value it holds
