  • Work is a significant source of chronic stress.
  • Workers are more likely to be absent, less productive and have poor relationships with colleagues if they are stressed.
  • Role conflict - activities that an individual must undertake that compete for their time and attention.
  • Intra-role conflict - occurs when two parts of the job present different demands and both cant be done.
  • Inter-role conflict is when the role at work and in life conflict with one another
  • Working women with children show a greater chance of developing CHD than working men or housewives. The chance increase with each additional child.
  • Level of control is having the choice or not over the quantity of work, the rate of work and where or when the work is done.
  • Lower level workers are 4x more likely to experience cancer, stroke or gastrointestinal disorders
  • A combination of low levels of control and high work loads creates job strain.
