  • Epidermis: outer layer, 5 sublayers, no blood vessels
  • Stratum Corneum: keratinized, dead, outermost layer of the epidermis, the one exfoliated
  • Stratum lucidum: thick skin on soles of foot, protection from continuous stress and pressure ( like cartilages )
  • Stratum granulosum: have keratinoctyes (produce keratin)
  • Stratum spinosum: (partly) for strength & flexibility
  • Stratum basale: lowermost layer, "mitosis layer", contains melanocytes, forms nails & hair
  • Dermis: "Skin glue", areolar connective tissue (for skin elasticity), blood vessels ( artery, vein, capillary ),
    • sensory receptors: thermoreceptors, pain receptors, mechanoreceptors
  • Hypodermis ( Subcutaneous ): between dermis and muscle, has fats and adipose
  • Hair: basale cells of skin, constitute of keratin and cuticle
    • 2 parts: hair root and hair shaft
  • Nail: hardened keratin and cuticle that protects the hands and toes
  • Glands: Secrete Substances in skin
  • Sebaceous glands: produce sebum / oil that lubricated skin ( prevents dryness )
  • Sweat glands: secrete sweat ( sweat has wastes, and it also helps in thermoregulation )

    • 2 types: Eccrine and Apocrine
  • Ceruminous glands: EARS, secrete earwax to trap foreign substances
  • Ciliary glands: EYES, secrete sweat-like substances for lubrication of eyes
  • Mammary glands: secrete milk
