  • 1960, began with four black American college students sitting at a white only lunch counter. They were asked to leave, but stayed until the shop closed.
  • This spread, by August 1961 there were 70,000 people involved in sit-ins across the country.
  • Protestors faced abuse, had food and drink thrown at them, were physically attacked. Protestors didn't fight back, remaining peaceful. Thousands of protesters were arrested, followed a 'jail not bail' technique. Led to prison over-crowding. Media reports. More joining the protest.
  • Sit-ins:
    • Economic pressure led to quick desegregation.
    • Large no. of people mobilised.
    • Non-violence led to increased support. Especially amoungst presidents.
    • Young people got more involved with the movement.
