  • Mississippi University resisted integration.
  • Black American student James Meredith applied for a place at the university, was rejected. The NAACP took his case to court, the Supreme Court ordered his acceptance. The university still refused.
  • The governor of Mississippi pressured passing of laws that would prevent Meredith from attending. So President Kennedy got involved, ordering acceptation of Meredith. Students rioted, 300 officials including US Marshals were sent to escort Meredith to the University.
  • 300 state troopers protected Meredith from his registration to his graduation.
