  • What are Education Action Zones: Additional resources for deprived areas. Helps them to go onto further education if they can't afford it. Typically working class.
  • What is Aim higher: Helped to raise aspirations of underrepresented groups to go into higher education.
  • What is EMA: education maintenance allowance. Helped students from low-income backgrounds for attending post-16. £30 a week to spend on anything just for attending.
  • What is National Literacy Strategy: E insured 80% students met the literacy requirements for their age group.
  • What is Sure start: Giving young people better start in life. Free nursery available. Gave parenting courses and childcare centres to help families out.
  • What is Vocationalism: Expanding vocational education to make sure it levelled with academic qualifications.
  • What were specialist schools: schools that specialised in a particular subject. Aimed to create diversity and give more choice to pupils and parents.
  • What were beacon schools: Successful school, would share strategies with other schools.
  • Why are academy schools: School that had more freedom and not ran by local education authority.
  • Whitty: Labour's equality policies are just 'cosmetic' and presents a positive image without promoting equality.
  • Trowler: the increased funding for state education, focused on raising standards and a 'learning society'.
