    • Marxists believe that crime is due to the bourgeoise exploiting the proletariat which further pushes the proletariat to commit crime.
    • Capitalism is criminogenic due to the competition, materialism and consumerism of society.
    • Inequality of society causes alienation and frustration which pushes the working class to turn to crime.
  • Laws are in favor for the bourgeoise due to the government making them
White collar crime and state crime (powerful crimes) are more likely to get unpunished
Corporate homicide have only had 26 punishments since 2007
This is an example of how the laws are getting enforced on the working class but not the upper class
  • Media can report on powerful crimes
Crime creates a false class consciousness which makes the lower class believe that they have the same rights and get treated as equal as the upper class which further emphasizes the exploitation of the working class
  • The structure of society is ideological and that we are economically determined.
The ideas of education, law and religion maintain the economic base of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat which then shapes/ reinforces the ideological superstructure.
  • Marxists- positives
    • offers an explanation of the relationship between crime and capitalism which allows us to understand why crime happens.
    • good at explaining utilitarian crime and powerful crimes
  • Marxist- Negative
    • Doesn't explain crimes of passion(e.g rape and murder)
    • Feminists- theory is too deterministic and that it over focuses and overpredicts the crime committed by the working class and ignores women and crime (e.g the chivalry thesis)
