  • The Bible refers to God with many titles, such as Majesty and Lord. To call God 'King' is a metaphor since the power of the king in the ancient world was absolute
  • Yahweh (Jesus) was envisaged as ruling over a heavenly council in the same way as a King on earth would rule over his court. The gods of all nations all obeyed Yahweh. There are also Psalms known as 'Enthronement Psalms' because they are hymns celebrating Yahweh's kingship.
  • The importance of this is the royal imagery used in the NT to portray Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus' role was to bring about the Kingdom of God. There are many interpretations of the meaning of the Kingdom of God. These different understandings can be summarised by saying that Christ's Kingdom is both a present and a future reality for all who believe in him
