role of ATP

Cards (5)

  • what is ATP
    • adenosine triphosphate ( made up from adenosine and 3 phosphate molecules )
    • when energy needed stored ATP splits
    • its a High energy compound
    • ATP is the only form of energy we can use for muscular contractions
    • ATP is stored in muscle
  • breakdown of ATP
    • the enzyme ATPase is released to stimulate the breakdown of the high energy bond
    • ADENOSINE DIPHOSPHATE + SINGLE PHOSPHATE + ENERGY
    • An exothermic reaction takes place which releases energy needed for muscular contraction
  • why does ATP need to be resynthesised
    • although ATP is stored in muscle, stores exhausted quicklywe only have enough ATP stored in body to last 2 secondsto continue muscular contractions we must resynthesises ATP quickly
  • how do we resynthesises ATP
    • resynthesising ATP requires an endothermic reaction ( absorbs energy)
    • energy is needed to rebuild the high energy bond between ADP and the single phosphate
    • food that we eat can be stored as amino acids, triglycerides and glycogen
    • when these fuels are metabolised the energy from them is used to resynthesises ATP
    • aim is to get ADP + Pi + ENERGY = ATP
  • name 3 energy systems that provide energy for ATP resynthesises
    • anaerobic ATP-PC system
    • anaerobic glycolytic system
    • aerobic system
