  • syntactic category of words = grammatical classification based on its function within a sentence (e.g. noun)
  • syntactic rules = principles governing arrangement and combination of words within a language
  • prosody = particular rhythm, cadence, and intonation used when speaking
  • prosodic cues = rhythm, stress, intonation that make it easier to work out grammatical structure and meaning
    • e.g. rising intonation in questions
