Milgrams research

Cards (3)

  • Milgram's study

    • Took place in a laboratory at Yale university
    • Participants were told the study was about how punishment affects learning
    • All 40 participants were assigned to the role of a 'teacher'
    • Instructed to administer electric shocks to a 'learner' who was a confederate when they answered questions incorrectly
    • Shocks were said to increase by 15 increment voltages with each wrong answer
    • Milgram, as the authority figure, wearing a lab coat, urged the participants to continue if they hesitated using standardised prods
  • All participants went up to at least 300 volts, and 65% went to the maximum of 450 volts
  • Individuals are willing to obey authority figures

Even when it goes against their own values and morals
