Baddeley tested participants' recall of acoustically similar and dissimilar words, as well as semantically similar and dissimilar words, asking them to recall in order. They found that immediate recall (STM recall) was worse with acoustically similar words, suggesting that in STM, information is coded acoustically. They found that recall after 20 minutes (LTM recall) was worse with semantically similar words, suggesting that in LTM, information is coded semantically.
