Ships of the Line:
the main battleships.
Frigates:
smaller and faster ships for patrolling, scouting or conveying merchantmen.
Broadside:
firing all guns on one side of a ship simultaneously.
Marines:
soldiers on board ships
Landsmen:
men with no seafaring or riverboat experience
Prize money:
where captured ships are sold and the money is allotted to the men. The officers took lions share.
Comptroller of the Navy:
headed the Navy Board- responsible for building + maintaining ships.
Forecastle:
raised deck at the front of ships.
Petty officers:
seamen who aren't commissioned officers but had some authority.
