  • Ships of the Line: the main battleships.
  • Frigates: smaller and faster ships for patrolling, scouting or conveying merchantmen.
  • Broadside: firing all guns on one side of a ship simultaneously.
  • Marines: soldiers on board ships
  • Landsmen: men with no seafaring or riverboat experience
  • Prize money: where captured ships are sold and the money is allotted to the men. The officers took lions share.
  • Comptroller of the Navy: headed the Navy Board- responsible for building + maintaining ships.
  • Forecastle: raised deck at the front of ships.
  • Petty officers: seamen who aren't commissioned officers but had some authority.
  • Nore: area at mouth of the River Thames.
